The volcano on the doorstep
Mount Etna is Europe’s highest active volcano and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It fills the skyline north of Catania, and from much of eastern Sicily you can see it on a clear day, often with a plume drifting from the summit.
Its slopes change as you climb: villages and vineyards low down, then woods, then black lava fields and craters near the top. It is a landscape that is still being made.
Going with a guide
For excursions on Etna we work with Etna Tribe, a local excursion company. Their brochure sets out the excursions they run, and we are happy to help you pick the right one for your group and your dates.
If you would rather go up on your own, the Etna cableway runs from the south side of the volcano and sells tickets online.
Either way, tell us when you enquire and we will fit Etna into your personalised itinerary. Our villa L’Etna di Gianlelè, on the lower slopes, is the closest base.
